SusFon's core competency lies in applying strong research, development, and innovation (RDI) evidence to implement community-based initiatives to alleviate poverty in Africa. Our actions span across ten programmes:
building and applying scientific evidence and resource economics for sustainable utilization of resources for SMME growth, community development, and equitable participation in the natural resource and green economy, with a special focus on maximizing the participation of vulnerable groups, such as women, persons with disabilities, and youth.
integrating and applying natural bio-solutions to support local and community sustainable agricultural practices, improving local grower economics to sustainably contribute to evolving food chain requirements.
Sustainable Tourism: supporting and enabling socially and environmentally sound tourism that benefits local and community economic growth, within climate and natural resource constraints.
doing more and better with less – SusFon supports the decoupling of economic growth from environmental degradation, increasing resource efficiency, and promoting sustainable lifestyles to contribute to poverty alleviation and community development.
Youth and Gender Equity and Redress: advancing equity for women and the youth, in the poorest areas of countries, through the application of evidence-based policy to implement programmes and actions to secure development gains and enhance the lives of all youth, women and girls, and persons with disabilities.
building and applying climate evidence for development, people, and economies, and to inform climate-resilient solutions for poor and rural communities.
Sustainable Waste Management and the Circular Economy: enhancing and advancing the waste circular economy for community and SME development, and support resilient waste management institutions across administrative and political boundaries.
advancing the human rights to access equitable and fair basic services, such as education, health, water, sanitation, shelter/housing, and clean environments through research, policy and strategy development, and M&E.
facilitating sustainable, climate-resilient WASH services, underpinned by evidence-based policy, for inclusive settlements that secure development gains and enhance the lives of all citizens. The program has a strong focus on hand hygiene for all and menstrual health for women and girls.
Alternative Energy Sources for Rural Communities: facilitating the advancement of use of cleaner technologies in rural communities in the pursuit of a more environmentally friendly world, concentrating on sustainable energy options for rural areas to build a more just and ecologically aware society such as, solar energy and biomass conversion technologies.
